Tom Cruise�s �Tropic Thunder� Cameo Is Not Actually All That Funny

As you may have read here, here, here, and everywhere else, Tom Cruise � previously though to be a batshit, couch-hopping, past-his-prime albatross who was single-handedly sullying the United Artists name � is resuscitating his career! Not with his eye-patch-wearing lead in Valkyrie, but with an uncredited (but endlessly hyped) bit part in Ben Stiller�s Tropic Thunder, as balding, foul-mouthed film exec Les Grossman. Everybody who's seen it says he�s going to be a star again! "For two hours," sighs Fox's Roger Friedman, "all that other stuff associated with him floats away, and you just get to enjoy that kid we met such a long time ago."
Or not. Not to get all spoilery (which apparently is okay with studios when you praise their product), but Cruise just isn�t that funny in Tropic Thunder. Sure, he wears a fat suit and spoofs a Sumner Redstone�ish blowhard who likes to yell. But a cussing Tom Cruise is not really a shock � after all, nobody thinks Tom Cruise is exactly level-headed. We�ve all seen him beady-eyed and angry on the Today show, attacking anyone who�s ever taken psychiatric meds. It's not like you never thought he had it in him.
But and then there's the dancing! As has been teased endlessly in the movie's positivistic hype, Cruise�s main comedy stunt is to dance to hip-hop, bumping, grinding, and air-spanking � yet another middle-aged actor milking yuks out of how white guys don�t know how to shake their flabby whiteness rumps. It's not incisively the freshest gag; Steve Martin finished off the trope in Bringing Down the House. It gets less fresh the longer it's onscreen � and it's onscreen forever. It makes him seem older and tied more out of touch, and it's just not funny anymore to see a steadfast white dude dancing care a black guy. (In fact, now that we think about it, could Tom Cruise's racial ventriloquism actually be more queasy than Downey's blackface? At least the blackface makes sense.)
As many B-list starlets would undoubtedly tell Tom Cruise, booty-shaking probably won't resuscitate his career. Cruise's big problem is that he seems stuck in the mould of an eighties stud, and hasn't found a way to connect in a generation of leading men like Will Ferrell and Seth Rogen. Cruise is floundering. And this cameo just now makes him look a little missed and nearly pathetic � shucking and jiving, trying to appeal to the younger moviegoers who ar abandoning him.
But here's hoping that he wears the eye patch easily. �Logan Hill

Born in Eugene, OR, singer/songwriter Mat Kearney began his musical life history at California State University, Chico, where he studied lit and played on the soccer team. After complementary his junior year, Kearney went to Nashville with quaker and producer Robert Marvin, with the aim of only staying the summer to lay down a few songs. However, after the offers for transcription deals began coming in, Kearney decided to remain in Tennessee to severely follow music. His interesting blend of rap and tribe intrigued Inpop Records, which offered Kearney the carry on he was looking for for and released his debut album, Bullet, in 2004. His followup, Nada Left to Lose, recorded at Dark Horse Studios in Nashville, set up Kearney departing slimly from his rhymes and concentrating more on guitar work, and was issued by Aware/Columbia Records in 2006.

At an age when almost boys' lives are consumed by the likes of pubescence and G.I. Joe, the members of Serial Joe were busy edifice their music careers. Ever since the rock band north Korean won the 1998 Much Music Video Award for Best Independent Video ("Skidrow"), their heavy act gainful off. Awards and nominations began rolling in and attention for the Newmarket, Ontario, Canada-based ring has been gaining unbelievable momentum. After unrelentingly playing in their parents' basements since 1997, Serial Joe decided it was meter to go public. The ambitious young group severally released their number one record album, Kicked, in 1998. In 1999, they received a YTV Achievement Award for Best Band and were nominative for the Much Music Video Award for Best Rock Video ("Mistake"). They were prestigious to play Woodstock '99 as comfortably. In 2000, they won a Much Music Video FACT Award for Best Video ("Deep") (the award was presented by Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons of Kiss during a tour with the famed glam rock band). 2000 proven to be an regular better class for the young banding; bassist Jon Davidson was 17, vocalist/guitarist Ryan Dennis was 17, guitar player Ryan Stever was 18, and drummer Dan Stadnicki was 17. Serial Joe has earned a number of prestigious nominations, including a 2000 Much Music Award nomination (People's Choice Award for Best Canadian Band), a Juno nomination for Best New Band, and a Gemini Award nomination for Best Specialty Show (YTV Achievement Awards, tenth Anniversary Show). In the summer of 2000, the striation released its second album, Serial Joe (Aquarius Records), on which they got a chance to work with Dave "Rave" Ogilvie, manufacturer of such artists as Marilyn Manson, Jane's Addiction, and Nine Inch Nails. Serial Joe's debut record album, 2000's Face Down, with Aquarius/DKD Group, has gone atomic number 78.

Neil Diamond Speaks About Shooting Drama
Veteran singer Neil Diamond has revealed that he was shot as a teenager.
Diamond said that during his younger years he got involved with the wrong crowd in Brooklyn, New York and was only convinced to leave the gang when he ran into trouble.
"On weekends, my friends and I would go out and get into fights with kids from other neighbourhoods.
"One night we were scrapping with these guys, when all of a sudden I heard a pop and felt a hit under my left eye,” he told Blender.
"It turned out I'd been shot. It was only a pellet gun, but it hurt pretty bad. That was my first and last gang fight."
Neil Diamond previewed songs off his number one album 'Home Before Dark' in New York earlier this year.

Eminem Prank Calls LL Cool J On US Radio Show
US rapper Eminem made a surprise appearance on the radio earlier this week disguised as a prank caller.
The rapper, who is currently recording his new studio album, phoned into his own radio station, Shady 45, during a live chat with the rapper LL Cool J.
Calling under the pseudonym 'Jason from Miami', Eminem challenged Cool J to a game of Name That Tune, where Eminem would recite Cool J's own lyrics and the rapper would have to guess what song they were from.
“Hold your nose, dead bodies are around/ I leave scratch marks under the tears of a clown," Eminem rapped, to which Cool J immediately replied: 'Eat 'Em Up L Chill'.
After receiving praise from Cool J for his rapping ability, Eminem finally broke out of his character to rap is own song 'Lose Yourself', causing Cool J to erupt with laughter.
Eminem then set the rapper another challenge - he asked him to collaborate with him on a new record.
"Listen, man, you got this relationship with Dre," Eminem said. "You're cool with 50, so when are we gonna hang out? I got cable at my house, and the game is on."

The Gossip's Beth Ditto will be launching her own plus-size cloting range according to the Daily Mirror.
The deal is in partnership with the Evans chain and will feature clothes between the sizes of 14 and 32.

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow was reportedly admitted to a hospital in New York for a brief spell earlier this week.
According to Us magazine, the actress was spotted slumped over in a wheelchair, which was being pushed by her singer husband Chris Martin, at New York's Mount Sinai Hospital on Monday.
A spokesperson for the actress was not available to confirm the hospital stay or give any further details about the star's health.

Cantet's 'Class' takes Palme d'Or honor
'Gomorra' takes Grand Prix; Jury prize to 'Il Divo'
CANNES - French director Laurent Cantet proved that last is certainly not least when his docu-like fiction "The Class" won the coveted Palme d'Or after screening on the last day of the Festival de Cannes. The win was the first Palme d'Or for a French title since 1987.
Based on an autobiographical novel by Francois Begaudeau, who also plays himself as a French teacher, the realistic film stars real teachers and pupils in a rough Parisian neighborhood high school. Though "The Class" screened on the last day of Competition at the Festival, the film received high marks across the board from international critics and audiences.
Robert De Niro, who stars in closing night film Barry Levinson's "What Just Happened?" presented Cantet, Begaudeau and all 25 students who star in the film with the prize at the traditional ceremony in Cannes Palais de Festival grand theater.
"It is ironic that tonight's closing night film is 'What Just Happened?' because when we announce the prizes, many of you will say "What Just Happened"? And that's how it should be," jury president Sean Penn said before presenting the awards. His words rang true as the list of mostly surprising winners unspooled.
Roman Polanski presented the Grand Prix to Matteo Garrone's "Gomorra," a harrowing exploration of organized crime in Naples.
The Jury prize went to Paolo Sorrentino's caricatural tale of seven-time Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti, "Il Divo."
Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan was named Best Director for his film "Three Monkeys."
"I would like to dedicate the prize to my lonely and beautiful country which I love passionately," Ceylan said.
In additional to the traditional prizes, Penn's jury chose to bestow two special prizes acknowledging the work of French actress Catherine Deneuve and American director Clint Eastwood.
"In this very peculiar place of trying to focus acknowledgement in a field of such powerful work, there are special awards sometimes that are simply acknowledging a piece of work or a body of work," Penn said before presenting the awards. "For the special prize of the 61st Cannes, there are two people that we have to acknowledge, Catherine Deneuve and Clint Eastwood."
Benicio Del Toro's portrayal of Che Guevara in Steven Soderbergh's two-part, four hour, 28 minute biopic of the Latin American revolutionary figure earned him the best actor award.
"I'd like to dedicate this to the man himself, Che Guevara," Del Toro said upon accepting the award. "I want to thank Cannes, I want to thank the Jury and I also want to thank and share this with director Steven Soderbergh who got up every day, forced me to do this. He was there pushing it and pushed all of us."
French actor Jean Reno took the stage for the announcement of the prize for best actress, which went to Sandra Corveloni for her role in Walter Salles' Brazilian drama "Linha de Passe." The actress was not present at the ceremony.
Last year's best screenplay award-winner Fatih Akin handed off this year's prize to three-time Palme d'Or-winning Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne vie for their drama about a young Albanian woman in Belgium, "The Silence of Lorna."
Previous Camera d'Or winner Dennis Hopper awarded this year's Camera d'Or prize, given to the best first film in selection, to Steve McQueen's "Hunger" by a jury presided by Gallic filmmaker Bruno Dumont.
The awards were handed out at a gala ceremony presided by master of ceremonies, French comedian Edouard Baer. They took place ahead of a screening of Levinson's film starring De Niro alongside Catherine Keener and self-parodying appearances from Cannes Jury President Sean Penn and Bruce Willis. Art imitated life as an ironic film-within-a-film plot saw the fictional film in "What Just Happened?" playing at Cannes as real-life Festival crowds watched on the large Palais screen.
Guests then headed to a closing night dinner and cocktail in the Palais Salon des Ambassadeurs followed by a night of dancing at the Majestic beach.
